This is a great time for college football. I think, as I said a few weeks back, this isn't the season of the QB or the year of the RB. It is the season of the gamebreaker. The reason, I believe, for this comes from a variety of factors, some quirky, some not.
Much of it upon first glance would seem coincidental, that dynamic talents like a Ted Ginn, a Reggie Bush, a Vince Young, a Devin Hester all popped up at the same exact time, and yeah, I buy that -- to a degree.
But I think it goes a lot deeper than that. For starters, coaches are copycats. Everyone is trying to replicate their own Reggie Bush-type weapon. ASU will unveil Rudy Burgess. Texas will showcase Ramonce Taylor. LSU even has a whole crew of these type of guys. Everyone is looking for that guy who cannot only create mismatches, but create diversions and free up "secondary" things, which in truth, really aren't secondary by design. The other big reason I think is coaches know their best playmakers are likely three-and-out type kids, so they figure we're going to get everything out of them before they bolt for the NFL.
