LOS ANGELES -- With all of Trojan Nation sitting on the edge of its seat waiting to hear whether or not its quarterback will leave for the NFL or come back and compete for a Rose Bowl or even a BCS championship, it's USC's left tackle who it really needs to keep its eyes on. What junior offensive lineman Matt Kalil decides could have a direct effect on Matt Barkley's decision. While the two have the opportunity to solidify the Trojans' position back in the national spotlight, the two will have to lead different paths on their decision to leave for the NFL.
Like Barkley, there are some reasons for Kalil to consider staying in school for another year. With four new coaches, three of them being in the Pac-12 South Division with USC, the Trojans have a great opportunity to find themselves undefeated and possibly playing for a place in the national championship game heading into the Pac-12 championship game.
There is also the matter of finishing what you started. Not on the field, but rather in the classroom. Barkley will have enough credits to graduate at the end of the current semester, while Kalil will be able to finish next fall. Once Kalil is in the league, it will be very difficult for him to come back to school in the offseason, especially after a long season that includes training camp, preseason, a 17-week regular season and the playoffs.
While USC fans wait on pins and needles for Matt Barkley's NFL decision, Matt Kalil's choice might be the most important.
