LOS ANGELES -- The tailback position at USC carries with it as much tradition as any spot in college football. From Mike Garrett to Marcus Allen to LenDale White, there are Heisman Trophy winners, conference record holders and college football legends.
Heading into the 2007 season, the position became something of a running joke, as a 10-player pileup created such confusion in the USC backfield it seemed no one could develop the proper footing to propel himself to reach his potential.
Still, despite seven tailbacks on the roster after the 2006 season, USC signed Joe McKnight, Marc Tyler and Broderick Green in its 2007 class, widely regarded as the top tailback class in the country. The lure of playing at USC for each was greater than any worry about the depth chart.
With only three tailbacks on the roster the coaches understand it's critical to add depth at the position in the next recruiting cycle.
