LOS ANGELES -- It was a big weekend in the world of USC recruiting, with the first round of Trojans summer camps and the annual Nike AirStrike 7-on-7 event, which traditionally is the kickoff to the summer throwing season.
There wasn't a bigger headliner on the weekend than wide receiver Steven Mitchell from Mission Hills (Calif.) Alemany. Things started slow for him Saturday at the AirStrike event, as he suffered through a sore thigh muscle that was heavily wrapped. As the event went along he felt more and more comfortable, and by the end of the day he was dominating the competition and led Alemany to the event championship.
Mitchell went to the USC skills camp Sunday and, according to his father Steven Mitchell Sr., the USC coaches said they were sold on making him an offer after his second route of the day. The younger Mitchell has good quickness and shiftiness with the ability to gain yards after the catch -- skills that should work well in the Lane Kiffin passing game.
