Commits, prospects square off in semis

When Santa Margarita and Mission Viejo tee it up Friday night in the semifinals of the Pac-5 playoffs, there won't be many surprises for either side.

The teams battled in the second round of last year's playoffs, with Mission Viejo holding on for a 31-28 victory. Santa Margarita offensive line coach Marty Spalding was a longtime assistant coach for Mission Viejo coach Bob Johnson. And the campuses are fewer than eight miles from each other, which has bred plenty of familiarity between the players on both rosters.

With the other side of the bracket thrown into disarray by Tesoro's shocking win over Anaheim Servite, the Eagles and Diablos have been on a collision course from the opening round. And just like last season, a USC commit could factor heavily in the outcome.
