Post-spring depth chart: Defense

All Access: Texas Spring Practice

It's never too early to start preparing for the 2013 season opener, which is August 31 vs. New Mexico State.

AUSTIN, Texas -- The Longhorns return nine starters on defense but the two they lose were their most important players -- Kenny Vaccaro and Alex Okafor -- last season.

So, during this offseason, instead of smiling about what they have, most Longhorns have been lamenting who they are losing. That might be because what Texas has coming back was in large part responsible for the worst defensive performance in school history.

But they are supposedly older and wiser now. Of course, that will be tested rather quickly at places like BYU and home against Ole Miss. What can be said about this defense is it is deeper than it has been in several years. The two-deep is littered with returning starters and backups who have also started games. In fact, the linebacker group -- last year's Achilles' heel -- has seven players who have started at least one game. As for who will start the first game of 2013, well here is the best guess two-deep for Aug. 31.
