Possesses above average height on a sturdy frame. Has a late-bloomers build with plenty of room to add bulk over time. He's a pocket passer with average athleticism and just enough pocket movement to be able to buy a second passing chance. Is not going to be a dynamic runner with his legs.
Shows good command of the scheme and is a very good ball handler. Works primarily out of the shotgun and shows very active feet in his setup and balance. Has a good feel for the pocket and is not too quick to leave the pocket when things break down. Makes quick decisions with the football post snap, but at times can get locked on his initial target for too long. Shows toughness within the pocket and will stand in the face of the rush to deliver the football. Can throw the football the move.
For the most part he shows consistent accuracy to all three levels of the field. Generally hits the strikezone, but also at times can place the ball in the vicinity of the receiver, but not in a manner that makes it easy for him to pluck and transition upfield smoothly. Shows both zip and touch and does a really good job of throwing receivers open to a spot. Shows the ability to drop the ball in over coverage and lead receivers to the sideline on intermediate throws.
Possesses a quick release and a live arm. Does not possess a wow factor arm. Is more of a timing and anticipation thrower with zip and the ability to get rid of the football quickly. Delivery mechanics are compact and consistent. Quickly strokes the football and flicks the ball on the move. Needs to be on time and in rhythm to get the most out of his arm. Can throw the ball deep, but will lose power the longer he holds onto it. He is very similar to Cody Kessler at USC.
Hicks has physical tools that are very intriguing because there's a lot of developmental upside here. He's a late bloomer and his best football is ahead of him. He has a nice feel for the game and a competitive temperament. While he's not the athlete that some people may be looking for, his skill set lends to just about any scheme.
