Draper has the height and range for the outside linebacker position at the Power Conference level of play; will need to add bulk and improve playing strength over time; it appears his frame is capable of supporting additional weight.
Instincts/Take On Skills
Displays quick hands when taking on blockers at the point; flashes the ability to shed and play downhill to the ball; is quick off the mark, showing run and pass blitz timing; moves through traffic, maintaining correct leverage when defending against the outside run.
Is an efficient tackler who does a good job of wrapping; will need to improve his ability to bring the lower torso through on contact; balances up in space, not allowing leaky yards after contact.
3rd Down Capabilities
We see a player who stays on the field in long yardage situations; is effective as an inside pass rusher, showing straight on power with change of direction mobility. Displays the athleticism needed to crossover for depth with good underneath route awareness; gets into throwing lanes to make the high point interception.
Draper is very productive blocking punts with two to his credit off the edge; also is effective covering kickoffs. Adding bulk while improving playing strength will require time and most likely a red shirt year.
STRENGTHS: Possesses a good blend of height, size and speed. Displays good recognition skills to read and react in the run game. Gets downhill quickly. Flashes good range and lateral agility. Does a good job of getting square and wrapping up ball carriers on contact. Shows above average strength in taking on blocks and shedding. ... AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT: At times will take false steps on play-action. Needs to be more efficient sifting through traffic. Coverage skills are still developing. ... BOTTOM LINE: Draper is a versatile athlete that has seen limited time at the LB position but we like his physical tools to develop there. Projects to get some high level interest once he sees more reps and gains experience.
