Prototypical size and strength for a college inside linebacker. Well-built and stout with great functional strength. Speed is more straight-line but he can run and hit for his size between the tackles and plays until the whistle. Better short-range tools.
Instincts/Take On Skills
Strong downhill plugger who is very stout and physical at the point of attack. Good shed and stacker. Makes quick downhill reads between the tackles. Utilizes hands well to keep blockers off his body when scraping. At his best playing with square shoulder pads to the line of scrimmage.
Strong run-through tackler when he's squared up to the ball carrier but can overrun and struggle to recover sharply. At his best tackling in a phone booth.
3rd Down Capabilities
Good in pressure schemes on passing downs. Times blitz well and shows a good nose for the ball getting thin through traffic. Shows some tension through his hips dropping in coverage; better coming forward than transitioning to turn and run in coverage.
Williams is a hard-nose, high effort linebacker prospect who doesn't leave much on the field. He has some limitations outside of the tackles but should fill the role of a tradition inside linebacker at the college level.
STRENGTHS: Shows good long speed and range on a muscular and lengthy frame. Does a nice job of finding the ball in heavy traffic. Takes good angles to get to the ball carrier. Shows good wrap tackling skills. Uses his length well to disrupt throwing lanes with deep zone drops. ... AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT: Displays very good upper and lower body playing strength but would benefit from adding more bulk to his frame to improve as a downhill run stacker. Lacks great closing burst. Man coverage skills require further improvement. ... BOTTOM LINE: Williams is a versatile, rangy defender with a nice frame. Productive on both sides of the ball. Projects as a linebacker at the next level. This is a player with a very high upside.
