Tall, angular frame that is very slight and lean. Very high-cut which hinders his transitional quickness. Shows good functional strength when pressing and as a tackler but to become an every-down safety at the next level he will really need to pack on some bulk and size. His long stride and arm length assists his range which is very good. Flashes very good pursuit speed.
Quick to close or get into pursuit once he locate the ball but does not show great initial reaction skills or read steps from a pedal. Does show good instincts feeling underneath routes develop and is a natural ball-hawk around the football when it's in the air.
Good range defender who closes quickly and covers a lot of ground fast. Utilizes his length to close and separate the ball and to also obstruct throwing lanes. Shows he can get off the hash and on top of routes in zone coverage or cushion high-low routes underneath. Wiry strength to press as well but shows some difficulty when trying to mirror in off-man and transition fluidly without wasted motion. Would like to see him play with more hip sink and knee bend.
Plays with good aggressiveness and will quickly assert himself into the box and make the strong tackler. Shows natural pop and explosion on contact that surprises you given his narrow base. Takes good angles to the ball without a lot of wasted motion. Can work on breaking down sharper in the open field and avoid lunging.
McFadden is an intriguing safety as he possesses a lot of size and range and a frame that is only going to continue adding size and physically develop. If the bulk comes to complements his aggressive ball-hawking skills we feel he has a very productive college future.
