Russell is a tough, hard nosed run stopper who will need to work on his coverage skills. Has the size with enough athleticism for the inside linebacker position at the major level of competition; might be able to put on some addition body mass over time. The strong wrap tackling skills he possesses should prove beneficial as a special teams coverage player; is effective blocking on punt returns. Is productive as a utility running back; flashes tough lead blocking ability and can catch away from the body; is a straight line power runner, lacking a burst or second gear. We detect some hip tightness when playing in space; will need to improve on his ability to crossover for depth when in zone coverage; flashes route awareness and his receiving skill should carryover to the defensive side of the ball. Man coverage assignments could test his playing speed . This guy gets a good jump on running plays; does a good job with key and diagnosis reaction skills against the run. Demonstrates the playing strength to take on and defeat blockers as a downhill player; can stack and work inside out to the edge. Moves through traffic well taking good pursuit angles to the football. Although we like his sideline to sideline effort his playing speed in long pursuit is challenged at times. This guy is a playmaker who finds a way to get around the football and quite often creates havoc in the opponent's backfield. We see Russell working his way onto the field after some time and perhaps a red shirt year.
