Smothers is a dominant run and pass blocker with very good athleticism and playing strength. Plays offensive tackle but his size is better suited for the guard position at the major level of competition. This is a flexible athlete with the initial explosion to get movement off the line of scrimmage. Comes off the ball with a flat back and good fit; occasionally his initial contact is too high however his base and leg drive are excellent. We like his agility and balance; has quick feet and is very sound technically as a run blocker; not a lot of unnecessary false steps. Can handle gap movement and adjust to change of direction moves. Demonstrates the playing strength to down or drive block with authority resulting in pancake blocks. Displays the athleticism to block 2nd level defenders; can sustain and play on his feet in space. Once this player makes contact it's usually all over; his tough aggressive finishing attitude is what we like to see in an offensive lineman. Does a nice job with pass protection from the tackle spot; shows quick and short set ability; the move to guard should be a positive as this prospect can handle quick moves. His ability to bend, slide and play flat footed are positives, as is his arm length and quick hands. Possesses the upper body playing strength to play stout vs. a power rush; his location and extension are good at this point of his career.
