Can UT's run game become elite?
Longhorns should mirror committee approach of these three programs
The Texas Longhorns have notched many achievements under Mack Brown's leadership, but the one accomplishment that has eluded them is breaking the team's single-season rushing yardage record (3,745 yards by the 1970 Longhorns). Brown's 2004 and 2005 squads came within 200 yards of clearing that bar but couldn't quite make it over the top.
This season's Longhorns have the potential to break that record. I'm already on the record as calling for Texas to win the Big 12 this season, and the promise shown by the team's running game is a big reason.
In order to top that impressive number, however, the Horns will likely have to do so with a running back by committee (RBBC) approach. And to succeed with this approach, they may want to take pages out of the playbooks of the other teams who figure to have the top running back committees in the nation this season.
