The high expectations for the Florida State Seminoles' 2013 season are about to be tested. The 4-0 Garnet and Gold have three games against top 25 opponents (No. 25 Maryland, No. 3 Clemson and No. 14 Miami) in their next four matchups. Their success or failure in those contests will go a long way toward determining if this club is back to its national championship-caliber level or if this is simply another very-good-but-not-great campaign.
So what do the first two games against BCS conference competition tell us about the Noles' chances to that next step up to national title contention? A detailed tape and metrics review indicates there are strong sets of positive and negative elements.
Here's a look at the good, the bad and FSU's overall outlook.
There are a lot of areas in which Florida State looks quite formidable.
According to ESPN Stats & Information, the Seminoles rank in the top five nationally in a wide variety of offensive categories, including points scored per game (51.3, ranked fourth), yards per play (8.52, second), yards per rush (6.52, ranked fourth), yards per pass attempt (11.39, ranked third), turnovers (3, ranked tied for fourth) and Raw QBR (91.9, ranked third).
