In the first notable trade of the offseason, the Atlanta Braves sent right-hander Derek Lowe to the Cleveland Indians for minor league left-hander Chris Jones. The trade helps both teams in a couple of tangible ways, and more importantly, sheds some light on what the Indians will be able -- or not be able -- to do this offseason.
Why this move?
Most obviously, the Braves are able to open up a rotation slot for a bevy of young, talented arms on their roster, including Arodys Vizcaino, Mike Minor, Randall Delgado and Julio Teheran. This comes at the expense of paying a reported $10 million portion of Lowe's $15 million contract, confirmed by sources within the Braves' front office.
