The second-quarter onslaught featured a stretch where New England scored three touchdowns in under one minute. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, only two other teams have scored three touchdowns in under a minute since the merger: the 2002 Seahawks against the Vikings and the 1998 Falcons against the Panthers.
Jets Defense Vulnerable Over Middle
Tom Brady was 11-of-14 for 282 yards and two touchdowns on throws between the numbers Thursday. His 20.1 yards per attempt over the middle was the highest allowed by the Jets in a single game over the last five seasons.
New England ran 65 plays from scrimmage excluding two kneel downs. The Jets matched up with five-or-more defensive backs on 56 plays even though the Patriots used three-or-more wide receivers fewer than a quarter of the time. Despite the extra DB on 86 percent of the plays, Brady threw three touchdowns and averaged 11.5 yards per attempt against the Jets Nickel defense.
Another Huge Game for Edelman
Edelman becomes the fourth player in NFL history with a punt return for a touchdown, a fumble return for a touchdown and a receiving touchdown in the same season. According to Elias, Edelman is also the first player to have an offensive touchdown (rushing or receiving) and a special teams touchdown in two straight games since the Bob Hayes of the Dallas Cowboys in 1968.
