Two-time Vezina Trophy winner Tim Thomas agreed to a tryout deal with the Florida Panthers on Monday. If Thomas passes the test, Florida would have to find a place for Jacob Markstrom or Scott Clemmensen. Markstrom could stay up with the Panthers – and even remain the starter. In that scenario, the Panthers could look to deal Clemmensen, who will earn $1.2 million this season.

In comments to a Finnish newspaper, Teemu Selanne has revealed that he has three options for the 2013-14 season: retire, play for Anaheim or play for another NHL team. The part about playing for another NHL team is new.

Latest on the talks between the Canucks and RFA D-man Chris Tanev are summarized here. Meanwhile, the team has high expectations for Zack Kassian this season.

It is believed that Jared Cowen's representation is trying to get their client a deal along the lines of Travis Hamonic's with the Islanders (seven years, $27 million). Here's more on that.

Defensemen Carlo Colaiacovo and Ian White are in position to watch yet another playoff game from the press box. Judging from Wednesday's skate, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock will likely stick with the same corps of six blueliners from Game 4 (3-2 OT win over the Anaheim Ducks).

UPDATE: Seriously, defensemen are dropping like flies in Detroit. According to Ansar Khan of MLive.com, Ian White will miss the next two to three weeks following surgery on his lacerated thigh. White went under the knife Wednesday morning.
