Spezza out

By Victoria Matiash

UPDATE: It appears as though Jason Spezza is about to go under the knife.

Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos reports the Ottawa Senators are expected to announce that "Spezza will undergo (a) surgical procedure on his back. Club doesn't considered this major surgery ..."

UPDATE: The injury appears to be more serious than initially thought.

As per Sportsnet's Ian Mendes, the general manager of the Ottawa Senators is scheduling a press gathering to discuss whatever is ailing his top centerman.

"... Bryan Murray will meet with the media at 11am to update the Jason Spezza injury situation. Obviously, this does not look good ..."

Spezza has missed the last two games for the Senators.

Forward Jason Spezza won't be in the lineup when the Ottawa Senators host the Washington Capitals Tuesday.

As relayed by Sportsnet's Ian Mendes, Spezza is out with an upper-body injury. After hearing from coach Paul MacLean, Mendes suggests Senators fans have little cause to panic (for now).

"... MacLean says that Spezza will not play tonight. He will be further evaluated, but sounds like he's day-to-day ..."

Young forward Mika Zibanejad -- recently recalled from the AHL -- is expected to draw into the lineup. Veteran Daniel Alfredsson (flu) also appears good-to-go.
