NHL Morning Links - Aug. 19
By Tim Kavanagh
One of the lingering issues at this time of the year is teams that have unsigned restricted free agents. One club that's "blessed" with multiple unsigned RFAs is the Toronto Maple Leafs, and here's an update on where things stand with Nazem Kadri and Cody Franson.
Meanwhile, a potential second NHL team in Toronto may become less of a reality soon.
Another lingering issue is the signing of the remaining veteran unrestricted free agents, such as G Jose Theodore. There was buzz that he was shipping up to Boston, but apparently there's no truth to that. As of now, Chad Johnson will serve as the backup to Tuukka Rask, and no, not this Chad Johnson.
Early talk has Martin Erat skating with Brooks Laich and Troy Brouwer this season in Washington.
After early word that a deal bringing Damien Brunner to the Devils was all but done, it appears that things aren't nearly that close to his signing anywhere.
As we know, David Booth is having some struggles getting back healthy again. Here's the latest look at his progress.
Sometimes, free agents fail to land a new deal because their salary expectations are too high compared to the reality of the market for their services. It appears that Mikhail Grabovski is in this boat.
A health update on Eric Staal, who was injured during the World Championships in May.
Some believe that the Panthers made a mistake by taking Aleksander Barkov instead of Seth Jones with the No. 2 overall pick (the Predators are happy about that mistake, of course). However, there's talk that Barkov could make the NHL roster as an 18-year-old this season, and play a key role for a team that's built on the strength of its prospect base.
Speaking of Jones, where does he fit in to the Preds' defensive lineup? And here is a trade suggestion for Nashville.
Here's a look at what to expect out of Kari Lehtonen (and Dan Ellis) this season in Dallas.
The Islanders may be staying in Nassau County for longer than we'd thought.
Another update from the front lines of the Jared Cowen-Ottawa Senators negotiations, including details of an offer on the table from the club.
Pondering the immediate and long-term future of Red Wings veteran D-man Niklas Kronwall.
