The mean age of the New Jersey Devils' blue line might fall a bit by the time the puck drops on opening night. According to the Star-Ledger, the Devils' general manager expects a minimum of one young defensive prospect to crack the NHL roster this fall.
"I will be shocked if there's not a young defenseman, at least one, in the lineup," Lou Lamoriello said this week. "But I've been shocked before. Which will really force moves. It's happened in the past. But they have to be ready to play."
The Star-Ledger's Mike Vorkunov suggests 21-year-old Jon Merrill was particularly impressive during prospects camp.
"I'm just going to come, bring my game and play the best I can. Hopefully make the team,” Merrill said recently.
Other solid young candidates include Alexander Urbom (not in attendance at development camp) and Eric Gelinas.
