Impact of the Olympic break
By Victoria Matiash
UPDATE: According to the National Hockey League, an agreement has been reached where the players will be able to participate in the upcoming Winter Olympics. As suggested earlier, a slightly longer haitus than usual will be put in place to accommodate for the games in Sochi, with NHL play breaking on Feb. 9 and resuming on Feb. 26. Now that this issue is resolved, the release of the full schedule for the upcoming 2013-14 campaign likely isn't very far off.
---While we await official release of regular-season schedules and an agreement allowing the participation of NHL players in the 2014 Winter Olympics, there's word of a longer hiatus to accommodate competition in Sochi, Russia. George Richards of the Miami Herald tweets that a "leaked" schedule for the Florida Panthers indicates a 20-day break for the Olympics.
In comparison, NHL squads got between 15 and 17 days off for the Vancouver Olympics in 2010. The 2014 men's tournament spans 12 days, launching Feb. 12 and ending with the gold-medal game Feb. 23.
