Benn deal done (update)
UPDATE: The Dallas Stars have re-signed Jamie Benn to a five-year, $26.25-million contract.
According to the Dallas Morning News, the Stars hope to have the young center back in the lineup for Monday's contest with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
"It’s really big," said Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk. "We know how important he is to our hockey club. It's good for our hockey club. It's great for Jamie. He needs to be back in that locker room with his teammates and tomorrow he will be."
UPDATE: Any moment now, perhaps.
TSN's Bob McKenzie, as of Thursday afternoon:
"... Hearing RFA Jamie Benn is getting closer to a new deal with the Dallas Stars. Not done yet but sounds like it's headed in right direction ..."
The Dallas Stars could have RFA Jamie Benn locked-in with a new deal in the not-so-distant future.
Drawing parallels with contracts recently signed by John Tavares (six years, $33 million), Evander Kane (six years, $31.5 million), and Phil Kessel (five years, $27 million), ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun suggests Benn and the Stars aren't likely far apart in negotiations.
