Streit's future (update)
By Victoria Matiash
UPDATE:The New York Islanders have traded defenseman Mark Streit to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for a 2014 fourth-round draft pick and 24-year-old minor-league winger Shane Harper.
"Mark is a player we would have had interest in on July 5th. We now have exclusive negotiating rights and we are hopeful that we can get an agreement in place prior to him becoming a UFA," Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said in a statement.
Streit is thought to want a multi-year deal worth an annual salary of $5 million (minimum).
*** It appears all NHL teams will have the opportunity to fight over Mark Streit this summer. According to Newsday's Arthur Staple, the veteran defenseman -- current captain of the New York Islanders -- is poised to hit the unrestricted free agent market this summer.
"... sources say #Isles captain Mark Streit will not return. Turned down team's best offer, will hit open market ..."
One of a few top-notch, experienced defenseman available after July 5, Streit is in position to make a decent killing with his next contract. The 35-year-old made $4.1 million (prorated in 2012-13) in each of his last five seasons.
