Latest re: Caps' Schultz
By Victoria Matiash
UPDATE: Defenseman Jeff Schultz will soon be free to sign wherever he likes. TSN's Bob McKenzie reports the Washington Capitals have placed Schultz on unconditional ($100) waivers with the intention of buying him out.
*** It seems defenseman Jeff Schultz doesn't want to play for the Washington Capitals anymore. Brian McNally of the Washington Examiner reports Schultz, frustrated by a lack of playing time, has been asking for a trade since mid-March. Schultz' agent Jarrett Bousquet: "It's to the point where playing in the [NHL] takes precedence over playing for [the Caps]".
With only a year left on his current contract (cap hit: $2.75 million), the imposing D-man (6-foot-6, 230lbs) should be moveable, as long as the Capitals aren't asking for too much in return. A member of the Capitals since 2006-07, the 27-year-old hasn't played for any other team in the NHL. However, considering the young talent rising through Washington's defensive ranks -- Dmitry Orlov, Cameron Schilling, Tomas Kundratek, Nate Schmidt -- a parting of ways may suit both sides in this case.
