Sakic's new gig (update)
By Victoria Matiash
UPDATE:Joe Sakic has been named executive vice president of hockey operations for the Colorado Avalanche. According to the Denver Post, the new gig provides the 43-year-old with the final say on player personnel decisions. Greg Sherman remains in place as general manager, but with less power. And governor Josh Kroenke takes over for Pierre Lacroix as team president.
*** Look for Joe Sakic to fill a more significant front-office role with the Colorado Avalanche in the not-too-distant future. As relayed by the Denver Post, an NHL source says such a promotion is in the works. No word yet on the exact position, but Adrian Dater suggests a prominent gig on the hockey operations side feels about right.
:... a vacancy in the front office recently came about when Eric Lacroix resigned as vice president of hockey operations ... Sakic, a hockey Hall of Famer, might be asked to assume a role similar to that of football Hall of Famer John Elway with the Broncos. Elway is in charge of the overall football operations ..."
Sakic has previously said he's not interested in serving as general manager (position currently held by Greg Sherman) of the club. The 43-year-old former club captain has served as an executive adviser the past two seasons.
