New Jersey Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov is facing a suspension after slamming his elbow into Brad Marchand's face during Wednesday's 5-4 loss to the Boston Bruins. Volchenkov was instantly assessed a five-minute major and game misconduct for the infraction. A phone hearing with NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan is scheduled for Thursday morning.
After the hit, Marchand dropped to ice, head in hands. The Bruins' forward had to be helped into the dressing room and didn't return. No word yet on his condition.
Rich Chere of The Star-Ledger suggests Volchenkov will receive a suspension of two to three games (minimum) from Shanahan. At least three games, if a earlier incident involving Zach Boychuk of the Carolina Hurricanes is taken into consideration. Volchenkov was suspended three games for elbowing Boychuk back in 2011.
