Greene eyes return (update)
By Victoria Matiash
UPDATE: Look for defenseman Matt Greene to be in the lineup when the Los Angeles Kings host the Columbus Blue Jackets. According to Helene Elliott of the Los Angeles Times, the Kings have activated Greene ahead of Thursday's contest.
UPDATE: Cleared for contact and travelling with the team, Matt Greene could make his way back into the Los Angeles Kings' lineup within the week. Lisa Dillman of The Los Angeles Times suggests Greene is only a handful of practices with contact away from returning to game action. As long as the Kings' defenseman doesn't suffer a setback.
*** UPDATE: According to Lisa Dillman of the Los Angeles Times, Matt Greene is hoping to take limited contact during Thursday's morning skate with the Los Angeles Kings.
"Try to get out here with some practices with these guys and see how it feels to get bumped around, maybe to give a hit," Greene said. "That's when the real conditioning comes into play, when you can get physical in the corners and still not be gassed."
If all goes well, this would count as a huge step in the defenseman's return from back surgery. A loose timetable projects late April/early May.
*** The Los Angeles Kings are in line to get a big boost to their blue line before the postseason. Lisa Dillman of the Los Angeles Times reports a healthy Matt Greene is expected back in late April.
Greene's "projected return is one more month", Kings GM Dean Lombardi texted Thursday. The defender had surgery for a herniated disk after suffering an injury in the Kings' season opener Jan. 19.
"... Not only does Greene provide a solid presence on the blue line — and has long been a penalty-killing fixture — but was one of the Kings' alternate captains, an important veteran voice during the team's run to the Stanley Cup last season ..."
The Kings are still expected to pursue an experienced defenseman ahead of the trade deadline. There's talk the club is looking at Jay Bouwmeester of the Calgary Flames, and Jordan Leopold of the Buffalo Sabres, among others.
