Sabres are set to "sell" (update)
By Victoria Matiash
UPDATE: According to TSN's Bob McKenzie, the Buffalo Sabres have traded defenseman Jordan Leopold to the St. Louis Blues for draft picks.
Look for the Buffalo Sabres to move at least one or two prominent roster players in the next five days. Accroding to the Buffalo News, the club's general manager hinted as much Friday.
"The things that we will look to add will focus on things beyond this year," GM Darcy Regier said Friday evening. "It may include this year, but the focus is going to be on next year and maybe even beyond that. So things that we do are going to be with that light in mind."
In other words, the Sabres are going to be "sellers" ahead of next Wednesday's trade deadline. Prime trade candidates include pending UFAs Robyn Regehr and Jordan Leopold. While there's been chatter about the potential movement of goaltender Ryan Miller and forward Jason Pominville, the healthy demand for rental defensemen should almost ensure one of Regehr or Leopold is dealt. And don't be surprised if Regier waits until near the deadline to make a move.
"The pressure builds until the buyers and sellers match and agree on a price," Regier said. "The closer you get to the deadline the prices can go up."
