No interest in Whitney?

By Victoria Matiash

There's word the Edmonton Oilers are garnering little interest in alleged trade asset Ryan Whitney. Discussing the subject on Team 1260 (via the Edmonton Journal), former NHL coach and general manager Doug MacLean said there doesn't seem to be much of a market for the Oilers defenseman.

"Can they move Whitney?" MacLean said. "I am hearing Whitney, the offers are not coming. There's very little in the way of an offer for Whitney. I'm shocked by that. I haven't seen him like you guys have, but has he dropped that dramatically that there's not even offers for him out there? ... And then I heard the other day whispers that he could go on waivers. That can't be true. But I did hear whispers of it on the weekend from a couple of agents and it shocked me ..."

Yes, that would be a shocking move by Oilers. Underperforming and made a healthy scratch for a good portion of this season, the 30-year-old defenseman still has a decent enough resume to garner some attention from other clubs. Perhaps the Oilers are simply asking for too much in return. In any case, the relationship between the Edmonton organization and Whitney appears to be nearing an end.
