Murphy's opportunity

It appears Ryan Murphy is only hours away from making his NHL debut. With Jamie McBain hurt, and fellow defensemen Joni Pitkanen and Tim Gleason not yet ready to return, the 19-year-old call-up from the OHL Kitchener Rangers is pegged to fill a top-six role for the Carolina Hurricanes versus the Winnipeg Jets. It's believed Murphy will be paired with veteran defenseman Jay Harrison.
The NHL stint has the potential to be a short one. Although McBain is thought to be out a couple of weeks, Pitkanen could be back on the weekend (Chip Alexander). Gleason isn't expected to miss much more time either.
