Why Isles' Tavares is among NHL's best
By Doug McIntyre
With 11 goals so far this season, New York Islanders forward John Tavares trails only Buffalo Sabres sniper Thomas Vanek for the NHL lead, putting him on pace for the best goals-per-game total of his four-year-old professional career.
Not that that should be a surprise: Tavares has improved his totals every season since being drafted first overall in 2009. It's that's no accident, says TSN's Darren Dreger.
"Skating and puck strength were Tavares' two main flaws in the first two years of his NHL career. Now, they are considered to be his biggest assets," Dreger told the NHL Network Tuesday night, adding that Tavares, a tireless worker, hires skating and skills coaches during the summers to help him raise his performance. "In every aspect of the game, Tavares challenges himself with the goal of becoming the best in the world," Dreger said. "He's well on his way."
