Sens/Avs trade talk

By Victoria Matiash

The Ottawa Senators could do much worse than snag forward Ryan O'Reilly as partial replacement for the injured Jason Spezza. However, the Colorado Avalanche is reportedly requesting far too much in return for the restricted free agent.

Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun suggests Senators GM Bryan Murray has chatted with Avalanche GM Greg Sherman about a deal for O'Reilly, but the rumored price of a roster player, prospect, and draft pick is simply too steep.

While the Colorado club is hoping to ship O’Reilly to an Eastern Conference team, Garrioch reports the Boston Bruins, New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Toronto Maple Leafs have all had trade discussions with Sherman. There's little chance the Avs will get the aforementioned 'asking price' -- if accurate -- from any squad for O'Reilly. Not if the quality of player/prospect/pick is significant.
