NHL Morning Links - Aug. 21

8/21/2013

As training camp with the Toronto Maple Leafs approaches, the absence of a new contract is becoming "more and more of a distraction", according to restricted free agent Nazem Kadri. Even though the 22-year-old forward insists he's taking the Maple Leafs' salary cap limitations "into consideration", the two sides are believed to be far apart on the negotiation front. While the Leafs are thought to be interested in inking Kadri to a two-year, P.K. Subban-like bridge deal, Kadri's reps are apparently keen on having their client signed long-term.

Looks like Teemu Selanne will let us know sometime next week whether he plans to return for another season with the Anaheim Ducks. The 43-year-old wants the chance to play a top-six role.

You can scratch Sheldon Souray from the Ducks' lineup for the next four to six months. The veteran defenseman is expected to sit out until December -- at least -- after undergoing wrist surgery in late July. To plug the roster hole, Anaheim signed 27-year-old D-man Mark Fistric to a one-year, $900,000 deal.

Sophomore forward Vladimir Tarasenko is a lot more comfortable heading into 2013-14 with the St. Louis Blues than he was at the start of last season's lockout-shortened campaign.

After enjoying just a teensy taste of NHL action in two consecutive seasons, 20-year-old Mark Scheifele is pretty darned determined to earn a permanent roster spot with the Winnipeg Jets, beginning in October.

Veteran defenseman Chris Phillips would be totally chuffed to wear the 'C' for the Ottawa Senators, now that Daniel Alfredsson has joined the Detroit Red Wings. Forward Jason Spezza is also considered a top contender for the captaincy.

For those keeping track of Leland Irving's career, the former Calgary Flames goalie has reportedly earned a tryout with Finnish squad Jokerit of the SM-liiga.

The Red Wings have signed restricted free agent Gustav Nyquist to a two-year deal. Over the 23-player roster limit by two, the Wings will have some trimming to do before the regular season gets underway. So you can probably rule out the re-signing of either Daniel Cleary or Damien Brunner.

Vernon Fiddler appears pegged to fill a fourth-line role with the Dallas Stars to start 2013-14.

Although his ankle -- broken by blocking an Evgeni Malkin shot June 5 -- hasn't healed as quickly as anticipated, Gregory Campbell might still be ready to play in the Boston Bruins' opener Oct. 3.

Minor-league regular Zach Boychuk has a new one-year, two-way deal with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Reportedly approaching a state of good health, if not yet medically cleared to play, defenseman Marc-Andre Bourdon (concussion history) has every intention of fighting for a roster spot with the Philadelphia Flyers.

Via facebook, Jaromir Jagr -- now with the New Jersey Devils -- almost promises to retire after the 2013-14 season.
