UPDATE: A new deal for Phil Kessel, while obviously important to Toronto, doesn't seem to be viewed as all that urgent at the moment. General manager Dave Nonis -- fresh off a contract extension of his own -- went on Sportsnet 590 and responded that he "wouldn't rule it out, but it's not on the front burner right now" when asked about the possibility of inking Kessel or Dion Phaneuf to a new deal before training camp begins. This could prove to be a critical time for the Maple Leafs. As we mentioned earlier, they finally seem to be moving in the right direction. But they have some key pieces to lock up if they want to keep the current group together. Nazem Kadri and Cody Franson are restricted free agents at the moment, James Reimer is set to become an RFA in a year and both Kessel and Phaneuf can become unrestricted next July.
