Sens in for Neal?

6/21/2013

The Ottawa Senators could get the chance to add some scoring punch this summer in Pittsburgh Penguins forward James Neal, says Ottawa Citizen blogger Ken Warren.

Pens GM Ray Shero are looking to resign Kris Letang, who's due to become an unrestricted free agent in 2014, to a new maximum-length pact worth $6 million-$7 million per season. But with the NHL salary cap dropping next season, and with Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury already under long-term deals, they probably won't be able to keep Neal and his $5 million cap hit if they successfully extend Letang.

Neal is a proven first line scorer who had 36 points (21 goals) in 40 games for the Senators last season, and the Senators have promising youngsters in their system who could tempt Ottawa, according to Warren:

"The Senators bargaining chips in a possible trade include young prospects Stefan Noesen, Matt Puempel and Shane Prince."
