Colorado's next coach?

5/16/2013

If not Patrick Roy, if not Dean Chynoweth, maybe the current bench boss of the Phoenix Coyotes might be the ideal figure to fill the head-coaching vacancy with the Colorado Avalanche. Dave Tippett's current contract with the Coyotes expires June 30; and the uncertainties in regards to ownership and relocation could push the 51-year-old to pursue employment options elsewhere. Mike Chambers of the Denver Post suggests Tippett would be a "home-run hire" for the Colorado club.

"... Tippett has qualified for the playoffs in eight of his 10 years as an NHL coach and never had a losing season. He led the low-budget Coyotes to the Western Conference Finals last season, his second trip to the league’s final four, and has said he doesn’t need to work for a team that doesn’t spend to the cap to succeed ..."

Tippett is presently serving as an assistant coach with Team Canada (including young Colorado forwards Ryan O'Reilly and Matt Duchene) at the IIHF World Championship in Europe. If the Avs are still without a head coach towards the end of June, and the Coyotes' future remains murky, you can count on a conversation with Tippett -- at least -- once his contract expires.
