The Colorado Avalanche are permitted to sign Matt Duchene to a long-term extension as early as this summer. That's what the club should and most likely will do, according to Adrian Dater of the Denver Post. Not only to ensure Duchene remains with the organization beyond 2013-14, but as means to re-establish a proper "locker-room salary hierarchy". Remember, the Avs were pressured to match the Calgary Flames' $10 million offer sheet for Ryan O'Reilly once negotiations with the then-restricted free agent spiralled out of control this winter.
