Why Wings were idle at deadline

The Detroit Red Wings are on pace to miss the playoffs for the first time in over 20 seasons this year, and to hear one blogger tell it, that might be just fine with team brass.

If the Wings can't win four of their final last five games -- a tall order given the way the they've been playing recently -- there's a good chance Hockeytown won't compete for the Stanley Cup for the first time since 1990.

But it would also give what's proven to be an average (at best) Detroit team this season a real shot at landing a lottery pick at June's unusually deep NHL entry draft. Could that be why Wings GM Ken Holland stood pat at the trade deadline earlier this month?
