After their ambitious offer sheet to restricted free agent forward Ryan O'Reilly was immediately matched by the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday, perhaps the Calgary Flames will finally forget about trying to win now and accept that the time has come to rebuild.
Going after O'Reilly "really didn't make a whole lot of sense and smacked off desperation," according to the Toronto Star's Damien Cox, who suggests that maybe the Flames will now bite the bullet and acquire some young talent in return for franchise icon Jarome Iginla before the trade deadline.
On the other hand, if recent decisions are any indicator, maybe not.
"It's really amazing how dumb the Flames have become," Cox writes. "The fact Calgary was willing to give up its first rounder to get O'Reilly suggests that pick is now in play as the Flames continue to fool themselves that the future is now."
