Karlsson, of course, is out for the season after undergoing surgery to repair the torn left Achilles tendon he sustained in a collision with the Pittsburgh Penguins' Matt Cooke on Wednesday. In the short term, the Sens are expected to spread Karlsson's 20-plus minutes of average ice time around the existing roster. If Ottawa struggles, though, GM Bryan Murray may be forced to consider alternatives -- including trading for Colorado Avalanche holdout Ryan O'Reilly.
"O'Reilly obviously isn't a defenseman," TSN's Darren Dreger told the NHL Network on Thursday. "But maybe Colorado has a package deal in mind that could fit in Ottawa."
