NFL Rumors: Rob Chudzinski

On Sunday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that the Cleveland Browns' search for a new head coach was hitting some bumps in the road, because potential candidates had been speaking with former coach Rob Chudzinski, who was not giving the front office good reviews.

UPDATE: As it turns out, the "bad vibes" noted below about Rob Chudzinski's grip on his coaching job with the Browns have proved to be true. Per ESPN NFL Insider Chris Mortensen, the team will fire Chud early this week.

Bill O'Brien, Ken Whisenhunt and Chip Kelly interviewed for the job last season. Kelly, of course, is with the Eagles now and O'Brien is the top candidate for the Texans' opening. Whisenhunt is expected to interview for multiple openings in the coming weeks, perhaps with the Browns again. Another prime candidate will be Patriots OC Josh McDaniels.

"If Browns fire Rob Chudzinski, Pats OC Josh McDaniels will be considered. McDaniels nearly hired Browns GM Mike Lombardi when HC in Denver," tweeted ESPN's Ed Werder earlier this afternoon.

Will changes affect TE Cameron?

Although Jordan Cameron had only caught 26 passes for 259 yards and 1 TD entering this season, he had generated quite a bit of buzz as a potential breakout candidate for the Cleveland Browns. He came through immediately, churning out 108 yards and a score on nine receptions (13 targets) in the opener against the Miami Dolphins. He followed that performance up with another 95 yards on five receptions (seven targets) in Week 2.

Much has changed since then, though. Potential NFL star Trent Richardson has been replaced by aging free agent Willis McGahee and starting quarterback Brandon Weeden has been replaced by career backup Brian Hoyer, at least for Week 3 versus the Minnesota Vikings. How will these changes affect Cameron's production going forward?

Well, Richardson seemingly had a minimal impact on the Browns offense during the first two games. He only averaged 3.4 yards on his 31 carries, totaling 47 yards in the opener and 58 yards last week. His longest rush of the season was just 10 yards, though he did chip in 51 yards on 7 catches. Last season with the Denver Broncos, McGahee averaged 4.4 yards per carry and churned out at least 98 combined yards five times. Granted, he had some guy named Peyton Manning helping him out, but at least he proved capable of producing well until his season ended with a broken leg.

Richardson's workload

Expectations entering the 2013 campaign were that Trent Richardson would be a genuine workhorse running back and perhaps even lead the NFL in carries. Week 1 didn't work out that way at all. He finished with just 47 yards on 13 carries. Even more concerning was that only five of those carries came in the third quarter and zero in the fourth. Coach Rob Chudzinski defended their approach on Monday.

Oniel Cousins, an offensive tackle by trade, was forced to play guard after the Cleveland Browns' top two options at right guard, Shawn Lauvao and Jason Pinkston, both suffered ankle injuries. Cousins is still competing with rookie Garrett Gilkey to open the season as the starter at right guard, but Cousins showed enough already to have the edge.

Injuries have limited TE Jordan Cameron as a pro, as he played just eight games as a rookie, 14 games last season and strained his hamstring in June this summer. However, according to ESPNCleveland.com's Tony Grossi, Cameron hasn't missed a practice during training camp and got some sage advice from Tony Gonzalez -- at the behest of coach Rob Chudzinski -- this offseason.

Last season, tight end Benjamin Watson pulled in 49 passes for 501 yards and three scores for the Cleveland Browns, but he left for the New Orleans Saints this offseason, which puts 2011 fourth-round pick Jordan Cameron atop the depth chart at tight end this season. According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Cameron has shown promise in camp, though he still has room for improvement.

Browns' running back Trent Richardson is attempting to eschew the label he's "injury prone." Unfortunately, he's continually dealt with injuries since he came into the NFL. Richardson missed another practice Friday after being kicked in the shin. The latest injury appears to be of little concern to the running back despite missing a session.

Things are pretty easy when it comes to identifying the lead back for the Cleveland Browns -- it's No. 3 overall pick from 2012 Trent Richardson, who totaled 950 yards and 11 TDs on the ground, as well as 51 receptions for 367 yards and another TD. There was some talk of an injury scare earlier this offseason, but the consensus is that Richardson will be ready to rumble again this fall. But how is it going to work with the other RBs on the roster?

As a former TE coach, Browns HC Rob Chudzinski was expected to make that position a featured part of his offense during his reign in Cleveland. However, that plan may have hit a bit of a snag.

Former Buffalo Bills wide receiver David Nelson tore the ACL in his right knee during Week 1 of last season and missed the remainder of the campaign. Now with the Cleveland Browns, Nelson isn't taking part in offseason workouts, but "he said he expects to be full-go when training camp begins on July 26," according to ESPNCleveland.com's Tony Grossi. Although Nelson is training away from the team, he feels he is in touch with them.

Although the Cleveland Browns could use some veteran help in the secondary, it sounds like they will roll with the guys they already have on their roster. Via a mail-bag column for ESPNCleveland.com, Tony Grossi said that the Browns are not interested in adding veteran free agent Charles Woodson to their roster.

Could Campbell claim Cleveland?

Cleveland did not select a quarterback in the recent NFL Draft and the coaching staff is more than happy with that player personnel decision. But although Brandon Weeden is still the guy they're hoping will secure the No. 1 job in camp, if Jason Campbell does enough to prove he's the better choice, they're also happy with that potential outcome.
