With the likes of Barkevious Mingo and Paul Kruger in the Cleveland Browns linebacker corps, it's no surprise that new coach Mike Pettine is excited about what he can draw out of them.

Rookie Cleveland Browns linebacker Barkevious Mingo has been medically cleared for contact and is expected to make his debut this Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens. The Browns are fairly solid at the linebacker position so it will be interesting to see how involved Mingo, a highly-rated pass rusher, is early in his career

Browns defense depleted?

A Cleveland Browns defense expected to be much improved may not show signs of its total strength this week as key pieces will be missing. Impact rookie linebacker Barkevious Mingo will not make his NFL debut against the Miami Dolphins in Week 1 due to a bruised lung. Without Mingo, the Browns will have less speed coming off the right side and might play more conservatively on defense against Miami.

Browns D offers fantasy upside

Cleveland Browns fans likely won't get to see their top draft pick in action when the regular season opens next week. Barkevious Mingo is expected to skip their battle with the Miami Dolphins on Sept. 8 due to his bruised lung, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. The Browns have scheduled a CT scan for Mingo on Monday, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Ed Werder. The test should help the team make a determination on his status for Week 1. He is making progress and should be back in action by Week 2, if he does end up skipping the opener.

It's a tough hit for a defensive unit that has shown a lot of promise under new defensive coordinator Ray Horton. In fact, they carry some sleeper potential as a group in Fantasyland, even without Mingo, particularly early on when they face a number of potentially vulnerable QBs, including Ryan Tannehill, Christian Ponder, Andy Dalton and whichever mystery quarterback might be running the show for the Buffalo Bills come Week 5. The value of the Browns D should only rise as Mingo's health improves.

Fantasy owners should be able to find some decent IDP sleeper prospects on that side of the ball, particularly in the secondary:

Jim McCormick
IDPs to target in 2013
"Cleveland's defense is getting some attention as a sleeper group in both real and fantasy regards heading into the season, and for good reason. It's a pretty balanced and talented unit, especially with vets like T.J. Ward ready to thrive in this aggressive and safety-friendly Ray Horton system."

Mingo and aggressive Browns D

When you are the No. 6 overall pick, like Cleveland Browns linebacker Barkevious Mingo, people shouldn't be too surprised when you do good things. Nonetheless, Mingo raised eyebrows in a good way during the Browns' preseason opener against the St. Louis Rams last night.

While the Cleveland Browns' braintrust have regarded their first-round pick Barkevious Mingo in optimistic terms since well before they made him that pick, that doesn't mean he's going to be starting right out of the gates. In new DC Ray Horton's scheme, the team will field holdover Jabaal Sheard and FA signing Paul Kruger as their starting pair of OLBs, while some believe that the Browns will deploy Mingo in his rookie season as the San Francisco 49ers did Aldon Smith in his initial campaign. But there may be a little more to the story than earlier surmised.

How good can Browns D be?

Tashaun Gipson will enter training camp as the presumptive starting free safety for the Cleveland Browns. However, ESPNCleveland.com's Tony Grossi said Saturday that his money is on Johnson Bademosi to come out on top in what he dubbed "a key camp battle." Rookie sixth-round pick Jamoris Slaughter likely won't figure much into that battle, as he works his way back from a torn Achilles tendon.

More on Mingo's rookie role

The Cleveland Browns targeted LSU's Barkevious Mingo as one of the players in this year's draft class that they believed could become a standout professional, and they landed him with their first-round pick. But just because they have high hopes for Mingo in general, that doesn't necessarily mean that he'll be in the starting lineup right away as a rookie.

The Cleveland Browns used the No. 6 overall pick in this year's draft to select LSU's Barkevious Mingo. When dropping such a high pick on a defensive player, teams typically expect said player to start, but that may not be the case for Mingo as a rookie with the Browns. Per Tony Grossi of ESPNCleveland.com, Mingo has been working out with the second defensive unit thus far in OTAs. However, Grossi thinks "it’s no concern and no reason not to expect a significant contribution from him as a rookie."

By using their first-round pick on LSU's Barkevious Mingo, the Cleveland Browns hope that they've found the next great NFL pass-rusher. He may well be. But as we look ahead to the fall, it's uncertain whether Mingo will be a starter in Ray Horton's 3-4 defense. Luckily, the team does have some other options there.

Mingo's impact on Sheard

In consecutive picks in last week's first round of the draft, the Detroit Lions and Cleveland Browns selected pass-rushers who had significant questions surrounding them regarding their ability to make an impact immediately as rookies. For Cleveland, the fact that they already have incumbent Jabaal Sheard and FA signee Paul Kruger on the roster means that they can bring Barkevious Mingo along more slowly, but some believe that they're going to throw the No. 6 overall pick into the mix quickly.

Sheard on the block?

During the previous Cleveland Browns administration, former second-round pick Jabaal Sheard made a name for himself as a pass-rushing DE in the club's 4-3 system. However, as Ray Horton takes over as the new DC -- bringing his 3-4 D with him -- the team first signed Paul Kruger to a massive free agent deal, and has now drafted Barkevious Mingo with their first-round pick (No. 6 overall). One wonders what the plan is with Sheard.

Mingo over Jordan for Philly?

One of the teams on whom it's been hard to get a handle regarding their first-round pick is the Philadelphia Eagles, currently situated at No. 4 overall. They could go CB, they could go pass-rusher, they could go offensive lineman, they could go with a QB of the future. Many have suggested that if it's a pass-rusher they want, they'd go with Dion Jordan, who was on Chip Kelly's Oregon team this past season. But apparently it's not that simple.

Rumors fly of Browns trade-up

At one point in time, the hot rumor was that the Cleveland Browns were poised to trade down from No. 6 overall, with the new set of decision-makers hoping to garner significant return on the value in that selection (perhaps from a team looking to grab an OT ahead of the Arizona Cardinals at No. 7 overall). However, over the past couple days, the new rumor is that Cleveland is looking to trade up.
