Lovie Smith's plans

By Tim Kavanagh

Even though former Chicago Bears HC Lovie Smith didn't land one of the various HC openings this offseason, there was a sense that he'd be tapped for a DC position somewhere. Apparently that won't be the case.

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported Monday that Smith will sit out this season, and hope to land somewhere in 2014, preferably as a head coach again.

It's really too early to speculate on where that will be, but suffice it to say there will be openings, as some coaches are entering into seasons where they'll already be on the hot seat as the campaign begins (Rex Ryan and Mike Munchak come to mind). As a coach that kept his team competitive for much of his tenure in Chicago -- and brought a Rex Grossman-quarterbacked team to the Super Bowl -- Smith is certain to draw interest next January.
