Bills' scheme under new DC Pettine
By Tom Carpenter
During his introductory press conference Friday, new Buffalo Bills DC Mike Pettine stopped short of saying which kind of defensive scheme he would install, according to Jonah Brohstein of the Associated Press. However, he said that there was a "misconception" that the New York Jets used a 3-4 system when he was there.
“The cornerstone of our system is its flexibility and its multiplicity,” he said. “We’ll be in 3-4, we’ll be in 4-3, we’ll be in 46. If you can draw up a front, we’ll probably be in it.”
In his four seasons as the Jets DC, his defense never ranked lower than eighth in yards allowed, and they were the top-ranked defense in 2009. The Bills seemed to be a bit miscast as a 4-3 base defense under Dave Wannstedt, as their personnel may have fit a 3-4 scheme better. Nonetheless, it appears that Pettine plans to keep his crew versatile in 2013.
