Spagnuolo and the Eagles?
By Tom Carpenter
After being fired by the New Orleans Saints, Steve Spagnuolo's name has been bandied about as a potential fit as Chip Kelly's defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles. Spags was once the Eagles linebackers coach, so there is a logical connection to be made.
However, Zach Berman of the Philadelphia Inquirer thinks it's unlikely that Spagnuolo will join the Eagles as DC, not just because "it appears [as] if the job is simply waiting on ice for 49ers defensive backs coach Ed Donatell to play the Super Bowl on Feb. 3, or on another name that has not yet surfaced," but also because "any potential marriage between Spagnuolo and the Eagles might also be complicated by the Eagles' potential defensive scheme. There have been hints that the Eagles will switch to a 3-4 under new coach Chip Kelly."
Spagnuolo has used an aggressive 4-3 defense with varying success. He won a Super Bowl with the Giants, but his Saints defense was one of the worst in the NFL in 2012. Regardless, if the Eagles switch to a 3-4 scheme, it seems unlikely that Spags will be dubbed to run it.
