Gilchrist moving to safety?
By Tim Kavanagh
A wild run of injuries during a game during the 2012 season brought about a situation where San Diego Chargers CB Marcus Gilchrist had to slot in at safety. As we head towards the start of the 2013 campaign, the club may be moving him there on purpose.
According to Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego, the Chargers are going to give Gilchrist "a long look" at safety this offseason, because they feel it may actually be a better fit for him. The Clemson product is open to the possible switch.
"Wherever I can help the team," he offered. "If that means playing corner and helping the team, then that's where I'll be. If it means safety, that's where I'll be. Wherever the coaches feel I can help the team best."
The other option to start alongside Eric Weddle is Brandon Taylor, a third-round pick in 2012 that is recovering from surgery in January to correct an ACL tear. However, if Gilchrist moves to safety, then the Chargers' starting CBs will likely be Derek Cox and 2013 fifth-round pick Steve Williams, or 2011 third-rounder Shareece Wright, neither of whom would seem to be as good of an option as Gilchrist. Should be an interesting process to watch as the offseason proceeds.
