Another DC option for Philly
By Tim Kavanagh
New Philadelphia Eagles UPDATE: It appears that the Eagles are moving forward with one of the previously rumored candidates at DC.
Philadelphia area broadcaster Howard Eskin is reporting that Eagles are expected to name 49ers secondary coach Ed Donatell as their next DC, per the Bay Area News Group. They'll have to wait until after the Super Bowl to make this happen -- and Eskin has whiffed in the past -- but the move makes some sense, as Donatell has experience as an NFL DC previously, and has made Pro Bowlers -- as opposed to pro bowlers -- out of multiple Niner defensive backs in recent campaigns.
HC Chip Kelly is not being hasty in making a hire at the defensive coordinator position; this is certainly an important hire for the offensive-minded coach, so despite the impatience of some observers, he'll wait to find the right man for the job. As Senior Bowl week continues, we'll continue to get some more hints as to the potential candidates for the post.
Monday afternoon, Geoff Mosher of CSN Philadelphia divulged that Donatell has emerged as a possibility for the role. Donatell has previously served as the DC in Atlanta and Green Bay. If Kelly and the Eagles want to move forward with Donatell, they'll have to wait for a bit, as the Niners are obviously neck deep in preparations for the Super Bowl.
