Curtains for Mendenhall?
By AJ Mass
Of all the running backs that the Pittsburgh Steelers went through in their backfield last season, which one is the most likely to return?
That's not an easy question to answer. As Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette points out, only Baron Batch is currently under contract with the team, and he recently suffered a broken forearm. The trio of Rashard Mendenhall, Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman are all free agents. Chris Rainey will be cut as a result of his off-the-field legal issues as soon as the team is allowed to make the move.
As much as Mendenhall may have burned some bridges with the team after he failed to show up for a December game after being told he was inactive, the depth at the running back position in the draft is not exactly going to turn a lot of heads. There may be no better alternative for the Steelers, and should they extend an olive branch, it might well be the best offer he's bound to receive.
