Niners in CB market?
By Tim Kavanagh
Following the trade agreement in principle sending Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs, the San Francisco 49ers will be armed with 12 draft picks this offseason, and that's before the compensatory ones are awarded (some have estimated the Niners will get another three). So they'll be able to use the draft to find themselves some new key players to continue building towards a championship roster. But that doesn't mean they're going to resist doing some shopping in free agency.
According to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area, the 49ers are looking to make a move on Miami Dolphins CB Sean Smith, provided it's "at the right price." Maiocco's source reveals that the Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are also going to be in the bidding for Smith.
The interest in Smith was already present before Monday afternoon, but the need for help in the secondary becomes a little more pressing for San Francisco, as the division rival Seattle Seahawks reached a deal to acquire WR/returner Percy Harvin, and this presents a new challenge for the 49ers on the defensive side of the ball. Adding Smith would certainly help in that regard.
