Arizona's RB situation
By Tim Kavanagh
Prior to the Week 17, Arizona Cardinals RB Beanie Wells caused quite a stir with his comments that he was treating the season finale as an "audition for a job somewhere else." This despite the fact that what Wells said rings largely true for a number of NFL players each season; for those on a team not headed to the postseason (and likely being cut the next offseason), getting good performances on film will help them land their next gig. As of now, Wells is still on the team and under contract. Will he be in the fall?
During his press conference on Thursday, new Cardinals HC Bruce Arians didn't mention Wells, and Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com opines that the Ohio State product's future is certainly up in the air at this point. However, Arians was pretty excited at getting to work with Ryan Williams (again).
"Ryan has to stay healthy," Arians noted. "I actually ran the [Virginia Tech] Pro Day there when all those guys came out and he was a fantastic athlete. He has to get healthy and we'll see how he fits. But as a running back, he's got what it takes."
An important facet to a tailback's game in Arians' offense is pass-blocking, and Wells would seem to lag behind a bit in that regard. That could lead to his dismissal, but bear in mind that Wells is under contract for a quite inexpensive $1.4 million for 2013. Stay tuned.
